Plant Description
Citrus aurantifolia, also known as the Key lime, is the juicy, aromatic citrus fruit used for doTERRA Lime essential oil. Key limes grow on small, shrubby trees that have leaves, thorns, and flowers. The Key lime fruit is typically ripe when the flowers of the tree have blossomed. Thought to be native to areas in Southeast Asia, the Key lime gained popularity in the Florida Keys, where it was grown and used as a main ingredient for Key lime pie—hence the name. After the citrus aurantifolia is harvested, the peel is cold pressed to produce a tart, refreshing essential oil.
Chemistry of Lime Oil
Main Chemical Components: Limonene, beta-pinene, y-terpinene
One of the primary constituents of Lime essential oil, beta pinene, is commonly used in perfumery. Additionally, some studies have shown that beta pinene has an effect on the monoaminergic system of the brain, which includes many of the brain’s chemicals and neurotransmitters. These studies have shown that beta pinene may help support balance of brain chemistry, possibly helping reduce sad feelings.* Lime essential oil also includes the chemical constituent limonene, which contributes to Lime’s cleansing ability*, and its stimulating and enhancing effects on mood. The chemical makeup of Lime is what makes the oil so fragrant, uplifting, cleansing, and stimulating.
Oils that Blend Well with Lime oil
As a unique, refreshing essential oil with a distinct aroma, Lime oil blends well with a variety of other oils. Try blending Lime oil with spicy or woody essential oils, like Cedarwood or Black Pepper, for a stimulating scent. Lime essential oil also blends well with herbaceous oils like Cilantro or Basil. For a bright, inviting aroma, consider blending Lime oil with Lavender, Grapefruit, or Ylang Ylang.
